Paul,

Great sketches. Of the ones I hadn't seen before, I specially love the Buffy, and cute supergirl.

How often do you sketch? DO you ever set out to create a loose pencil piece and not just a rough stage to a more finished piece?

Hey Carlos,

I sketch about everyday... some of it is just warm-up before the real daily work...from pics in magazines, or pics of my friends and pets, some might be prelims work for a special job...some are done very loosely while I get phone calls.
When I sketch just for myself, I usually leave the drawings pretty loose.

Recently I found myself more and more often sketching from pics I've seen on the web because of a pose I like...the drawing stay very loose because at this moment I don't know yet what I'm gonna do with it. It might end up someday as a cover for Cavewoman, who knows? Wink

Very nice, great job on the face Smile

Your previous post mentioned sketching when something (pose, etc.) catches your eye on the web or elsewhere. Do you use references for your work? If so, do you get the references from magazines and the web or do you create your own via photography and models?

I use references for almost everything that exists in the real world. Cars, helicopters, horses...all the things that I cannot make up with an acceptable accuracy.
Now for the human beings, it's different. When I look at a pic that I find interesting or dynamic, I'll will try to use it. Again, generally speaking, the pics that get me all excited offer me poses or angles I couldn't make up by myself. So it's a learning process. The moment I understand how to do it on my own, I will forget about it...and eventually it will pop up from time to time in my made up stuff.
Sometime I make my own photos with friends, for specific panels or illustrations...it happened in the past.

The thing that can be dangerous with photos is that your drawing abilities are always growing, and comes the time when you realize that you can pretty much draw that girl or whatever on the pic. I mean really get the details that make the likness right...but then you realize that you don't want to be dependant of a pic. You just want to learn from it.

That's why I usually do all these prelims. I have to decypher the pic and make it my own. Sketchbooks are made for that Smile

Paul,

Thanks for clarifying that.

On a different note, do you pick a theme for the art you sketch? I see lots of Star Wars and Cavewoman art, as well as various comic characters (WW, Batman, etc.). Are these ever skectched as part of a theme or just separate ideas at one time or another? How did you become interested in Cavewoman? Were you a big fan of the comic or just jungle babes in general?

Hmmm, maybe this should be in the Let's Talk with Paul section instead.

I have my favorite themes that pop up here in there in my sketchbooks. Star Wars is one of them. Each time I watch or read, or just that I am in a Star Wars mood, I end up drawing. Same goes for Batman, Flash Gordon.
It's just like playing with your GI JOE action figures when you're a kid.

Sometime I will just do sketches inspired by my heroes artists. Not the same style, just the spirit.
For instance, if you see me sketching Captain Britain, you can be sure that I'm in a Davis mood Smile

It's the better way I know to get it out. Put that on paper just help me get over it in a fun and enjoyable way.

Now, about Cavewoman. Of course I've always been a huge fan of the jungle girls as drawn by Dave Stevens, Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta and Mark Schultz. Frank Cho is the one that got me into Cavewoman first. I didn't know the book before that. So I looked for it and saw beautiful watercolors illos by Budd Root on the web. Around that time my friend Ugo offered to mail me all the back issues (thanks Ugo!), and he also commissioned a Cavewoman drawing, the first I did. By the time I read the books, I was impressed by the stories. I was expecting fun light stuff. Cheesecake material... but it was more than just that. It was a great read.
Then I was offered to do various projects on Cavewoman and finally did a one shot. I'm now doing a lot of Cavewoman stuff for 2006. First there will be the pin-up books that I'm finishing. There's also a lot of covers that will pop up all along the year...and then, later, another one-shot with Rich.
It's a lot of fun Smile

It's great to hear that you two will be working together again. Do you know if it will be a Cavewoman project, or something else?

It's a Cavewoman project. Rich and I came up with a nice little action story that will be exciting to draw. There will be a lot more fights and drama in this one Twisted Evil

Guilty your Honor !
It was me that offered Paul his first dose of Cavewoman and hooked him up to that series ! Twisted Evil

Jokes aside,
it was the year 2002 and you were asked to do some Cavewoman pin-ups and I sent you - to use as reference -some copies ( I had some extra copies because Budd sent me around the same time a bunch of signed copies) of the Pangean Sea storyline. You ended up liking them so I sent you the TPB of the original series and the single issues of Rain.
And as a thank you Paul sent me his first ever Cavewoman pin-up ( check the date...2002), here's the scan :

I agree. Budd writes Cavewoman with his heart and he's telling a beautiful story. Add to that he's a wonderful artist and what you get is one of the best comic books in stores.
