The new hard-cover series of reprints of Hal Foster’s PRINCE VALIANT is a project that no fan of wonderful illustrative comic art and rousing good story-telling will want to miss. Volume 1 (1937-1938) arrived in my local comic shop this past week.
When I put myself down for the first volume, I was hesitant. The promotional copy stated that this would be a higher level of color and reproduction than the last go-round Fantagraphics published in softcover, and much slimmer volumes, but you never know what you’re going to get until you see it.
Well, I’ve seen it.
If you are familiar with the Sunday Press GASOLINE ALLEY & LITTLE NEMO volumes – it’s that good. Not as large as the Sunday Press volumes, but the clarity of line and quality of color are pretty much unsurpassed.
In the 1980‘s Rick Norwood from Manuscript Press produced three outstanding and huge softcover volumes showcasing in each the first three years of PRINCE VALIANT. I thought that those volumes would always remain unsurpassed, and to some extent they are. But Rick had to go to the cost of creating new color separations for the colors in those volumes to reproduce the colors of the original Sunday pages.
Fantagraphics new series gained access to Foster’s own set of full color engraver’s proofs – that he donated to Syracuse University, and they are the basis for these new volumes. Meaning no disparagement to Rick Norwood’s efforts, the weakest pages in Fantagraphics’ first volume were the first 10 pages of the strip which were shot from Rick’s AMERICAN EPIC Volume 1.
There’re more specials in this volume – a reprint of the Fred Schreiber NEMO magazine interview with Foster from 25 years ago, and a biographical overview by Brian M. Kane, Foster’s biographer – both of which are accompanied by rare Foster art – much of which is unseen for decades.
Do yourselves a favour and pick up this new set. _________________ Best wishes!

Hi
Did you know that several years there was also a nice French colour edition.
Reproduced from newspaper proofs.
One word against these was that on several pages the backside strip showed trough.

Yes, the ZENDA books. I've heard they were considered to be the best reproduction worldwide. I didn't mind the "see thru the backside" aspect. Gave it a vintage flavour.
This collection is hard to find nowadays. _________________ Paul Renaud |

Finally got my copy of the first volume of Fantagraphic's new collection.
The coloring is vibrant and the line work is crisp.
+the larger size give the pages their majesty back.
I just wanted to make clear that this is the best Prince Valiant I have seen so far. The pages look like they were fresh from yesterday.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR VOL 2!!
I want to thank Ray for the heads up. I would have probably missed it if not for his post here.
What a great, GREAT work.
From a Prince Valiant fan, a big THANK YOU to the Fantagraphic people who went the extra mile to produce this beauty. _________________ Paul Renaud |

HI
With the Dutch edition we have already six volumes and now for the ones that missed out on the big ones they produced small album sized editions.
And then it shows that detail gets lost when you see the smaller form.
Prince Valiant is at his best at large format.
Al the best

And last but not least:
The Prince Valiant Page
By Gary Gianni
112 pages, 9"x12", black and white, hardcover. Color cover with dust jacket. Three gatefolds in color.
A wonderful entrance to the world of Prince Valiant as told by great artist Gary Gianni. Gianni offers and detailed description of his new life now that he's Prince Valiant new artist.
| Quote: | The Prince Valiant Page is the first book collection featuring Gary Gianni’s work on Prince Valiant. This book gives a well-rounded informative look at both Gianni’s rendition of the Prince Valiant Sunday strip and his own working procedures. After 25 years as a professional illustrator, Gianni describes his new role as an assistant to John Cullen Murphy (who assisted Hal Foster--Prince Valiant's creator). Upon Murphy's retirement, Gianni became the third artist in the 70-year history of the feature. It continues with in-depth knowledge of the strip’s creative process (i.e., receiving the script, photographing models, making preliminary drawings and pencil roughs, then concluding with the finished illustrations). Supporting artwork includes collaborations between Murphy and Gianni, with Murphy’s hand written notes and instructions. Examples of Gianni’s work over the previous thirty years as a professional illustrator are included as well.
Gianni’s entertaining, insightful text reveals his methods and working relationships with Murphy and current Prince Valiant writer, Mark Schultz. Further, he explains the usage of his tools and provides many tips learned during the course of his career. Prince Valiant aficionado’s, those interested in the creation process, and enthusiasts of Gianni’s artwork will all find this book appealing.
Most reproductions are direct from the original artwork, rendered with archival quality, and displayed in museum catalog format. Gianni’s originals are delineated using brush and pen. He utilizes these tools to create tones and variations often lost in the pure black and white reproduction methods characteristically employed in newspapers and comics. Gianni’s work has never been reproduced in this manner before. His full tonal range will be revealed for the first time.
This book includes three gatefolds of Prince Valiant strips in color to showcase the finished works. |
